Description 1,4-butane sultone is a six-membered δ-sultone and the cyclic ester of 4-hydroxybutanesulfonic acid. As a sulfo-alkylating agent, 1,4-butanesultone is used to introduce the sulfobutyl group into hydrophobic compounds possessing nucleophilic functional groups, for example hydroxy groups or amino groups.

Uses

1,4-butane sultone(1,4 BS) is an intermediate widely used for sulfonated surfactants. 1,4 BS is also applied in photo development and electroplating.

Safety Profile

Suspected carcinogen with experimental tumorigenic data. Poison by subcutaneous, intravenous, and intraperitoneal routes. Moderately toxic by ingestion. Experimental reproductive effects. Human mutation data reported. See also SULFONATES. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of SOx
